Poultry Microbiota: The Invisible Ecosystem Behind Performance

When discussing poultry nutrition, attention is often focused on ingredients, feed formulation, or production performance. However, another factor is receiving increasing attention from researchers and industry professionals: the gut microbiota.

Far more than a simple collection of bacteria, the microbiota consists of microorganisms that live within the digestive tract and actively participate in processes related to digestion, gut health, immune response, and even bird behavior.

More Than Digestion

A balanced microbiota helps break down dietary components that birds cannot fully utilize on their own. As a result, compounds such as short-chain fatty acids are produced, providing energy and contributing to intestinal health.

Research has also shown that shifts in the microbiota can influence immune function, metabolism, growth, and overall production performance.

For this reason, some scientists now refer to the microbiota as a functional “organ” due to the wide range of roles it plays within the animal.

Nutrition Also Shapes the Microbiota

Among the many factors that influence the microbiota, diet remains one of the most important.

Feed composition can encourage the growth of specific microbial populations. For example, research has shown that certain fiber sources may support beneficial bacteria, while different lipid profiles can also influence microbial balance within the digestive tract.

This relationship helps explain why concepts such as prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics have gained increasing attention in modern poultry nutrition. Numerous studies suggest that these tools can contribute to microbial balance, intestinal health, and productive performance.

A Growing Area of Interest

Over the past several years, the microbiota has evolved from a primarily academic topic into one of the most active areas of research in animal nutrition.

A deeper understanding of how the microbiota develops, responds to nutrition, and interacts with bird health may create new opportunities to improve productivity, welfare, and resilience in poultry production systems.

Beyond individual nutrients, the conversation is increasingly shifting toward the intestinal ecosystem as a whole—and the important role it plays in modern poultry production.
